Lasius niger digging

*EDIT*

Ooohh a DD! Thank you so much!

Thank you all for the suggestion, the feature, the comments, the favourites!

I have read the comments and a lot of them are asking what this photo is all about.

It is a photograph of common UK garden ants, Lasius niger, digging in an ant farm. Rather than sand, the ant farm is filled with a blue gel, which they tunnel in. They can also eat the gel, so it meets all their requirements.

Thought so, I remember when ant farms were popular in elementary school class rooms.

But I've seen class rooms that raise butterflies more than they do with ants.

Both are entertaining to watch. :)

They are digging into an art farm that is filled with this sort of edible gel. You can order it anywhere I think.

This is so cool o_o I'm definitely showing this to my dad! He loves ants.

My dad has kept an ant farm for as long as I can remember. In the winter time, he'd find logs with ant colonies in them and take them out one at a time and put them in a jar. Once he found the queen, he'd put them back outside to let hibernation continue as normal. When their hibernation season was over, he'd attach them to a custom-made ant farm (usually an "outdoor" terrarium in a fish tank with a tube connecting it to a slab of wood with glass on both sides). They'd come out of their jar and head into the tank, and eventually tunnel into the wood, which was cool because you can see the insides.

They'd be fed assorted bugs from around the house as well as some home-made ant-food-gel. He'd watch them and enjoy them for a few months and then take them back to the woods where he found them and let them go.

Just thought I'd share that :) What's your take on Gel vs Wood or another nest material? Is the Gel better for the ants?

Ants are truly some under-appreciated animals. They do some much work, despite how small they are. They are such fantastic little things.
